skills for the treatment you require.

Our Occupational Therapists have the skills across a broad spectrum of specialisms and are able to
manage complex cases where expertise in required in more than one area. For example, someone who
has had a stroke and also has vascular dementia.
Our Occupational Therapists work closely with our care staff who are fully trained in reablement
techniques, ensuring reablement is the focus of all activities of daily living. We will also work with your
own care staff helping them to help you.
Helping People to Remain Independent.
As health care has improved we are all living longer. This is great news but can have challenges.
We understand that people want to remain in their own home.
At Dependability we have always recognized this and our commitment to you is we work with you, to
enable you to remain in your own home as independently as possible, for as long as possible, and as
safely as possible, so you can enjoy a fulfilling life.
These are five areas that carer’s may help in when assisting close relatives to
remain independent:
1. Eating Healthily - Healthy eating is an essential component in ensuring physical and emotional well-
being. As we all get older driving and getting to the shops can be a challenging activity. It may help if
groceries and medicine are delivered to the door, online shopping can help reduce the physical stress
of standing in line at the local supermarket.
At Dependability, we offer an on-line shopping service for people who are unable to use a
computer.
2. Prepare the Home – The home should be safe. Take a moment to look at potential hazards that may
cause a trip or a fall. Maybe install some rails to support them as they walk around your property or in
key areas where they are having difficulty.
At Dependability, we offer an Occupational Therapy assessment service to identify these areas.
3. Review Health Care Checks – On discharge from hospital people may need medication regularly or
need to check their blood sugar or blood pressure. These tasks can seem inconsequential but will be
important in maintaining their health.
At Dependability, we offer a Personal Care service and can visit people regularly.
4. In case of an Emergency - one in 3 adults over the age of 65 fall each year. This can be a crisis if no one
is present to help. For a small amount each week you may wish to invest in a care alarm service.
At Dependability, we can organise for you a “call Alarm Service”
5. Addressing Emotional Needs – The need for sincere companionship is a fundamental need for
continued good health. In the busy lives we lead we can concentrate on the basics of food delivery and
cleaning. However research has found that loneliness and increase an untimely death by 45
percent (University of California, San Francisco. [vi]).
Smart Phones and Tablets are a good way or keeping people in touch. mobile video chat can make visual
communication possible when adult children live outside the region. Even if an initial training session is
necessary, the ability to view each other’s faces will be worth the effort.
Also, keep in mind that seniors are accustomed to leading productive lives, as are you, and their days
should involve hobbies and engaging activities. Help arrange regular visits to the local community center
for basic computer or senior aerobics classes. It’s all about finding ways to help nourish a sense of
belonging.
At Dependability, we can offer companionship by visiting regularly.
